For over a decade, RedAid Nigeria and American Leprosy Missions have forged a steadfast partnership, significantly enhancing the diagnosis and management of leprosy and Buruli ulcers across Nigeria. Last Friday marked a memorable occasion as Mr. Jim James Oehrig, Vice President of Internal Mission & Partner Engagement at American Leprosy Missions, graced RedAid Nigeria with his presence. His last visit coincided with our 50th anniversary celebration as the German Leprosy and TB Relief Association (DAHW).

American Leprosy Missions seeks out partnerships with government Ministries of Health, responsible National NGOs, and faith-based hospitals, and in RedAid Nigeria, they found reliable allies. Through this enduring collaboration, they generously donated a state-of-the-art PCR Machine for diagnosing leprosy and Buruli ulcer to St. Joseph Hospital, Adazi Nnukwu, marking the second of such kind of equipment in the facility (the first was donated by DAHW). This crucial equipment has revolutionized diagnostic capabilities and vastly improved patient care in the region.

Accompanied by Dr Daniel Egbule, CEO of RedAid Nigeria, Dr Ugochukwu Chukwulobelu, the Anambra State Program Manager for the State Tuberculosis and Leprosy Control Programme (STBLCP), and a dedicated team from RedAid Nigeria including Dr Anthony Meka (Senior Technical Advisor), Mr Okechukwu Ugwu (Logistics and Procurement Director), and Mr. Ajuluchukwu Edechiene (Communications Manager), Mr. Oehrig embarked on a tour of St. Joseph Hospital. Witnessing firsthand the impact of their collaboration, they explored various departments, including the laboratory where the PCR Machine is housed, and the pharmacy where essential drugs for treating Buruli ulcer and leprosy, donated by ALM through RedAid Nigeria, are dispensed. He also visited the BU Ward where some children are recuperating from various corrective surgeries.

This visit not only highlighted the tangible impact of the partnership on healthcare delivery but also laid the foundation for future collaborations. Both RedAid Nigeria and ALM reiterated their commitment to advancing joint efforts to address the healthcare needs of individuals affected by diseases of exclusion and poverty, particularly leprosy and BU.

As the partnership between RedAid Nigeria and American Leprosy Missions continues to flourish, it stands as a beacon of hope, showcasing how collaboration and shared dedication can make a tangible difference in the lives of those in need. Together, they are paving the way for a healthier and more resilient community, one step at a time.
